A school can't teach if it isn't safe. When a building isn't secure, it's a distraction for students, teachers, and staff alike. Safety — real physical security, and a climate of respect where teachers are supported and backed up — is the foundation everything else is built on. It's my first priority, period.

A safe, well-funded school still needs great people in it — not just bodies in a classroom, but qualified, dedicated professionals, and the paraprofessionals, bus drivers, custodians, and cafeteria workers who keep everything running. The only way to attract and keep them is to pay them what they're worth. Do that, and the whole system works.

Veteran Leadership for Stronger Schools

Ben Banchs has called St. Tammany home since 2005. He is a 27-year veteran of the Louisiana Air National Guard who worked on F-15 fighter jets, responded to the call of duty after 9/11, and was on the front lines of nearly every hurricane from Katrina forward. A proud graduate of Louisiana public education, Ben and his wife of 30-plus years, Rhonda, raised three daughters who came up through St. Tammany Parish schools, from Abita Elementary to Fontainebleau High. He's spent his life in service to others — as Business Manager of Laborers' Local 1776, as a youth softball coach at the Abita ballpark, and as an American Legion leader whose committee awarded more than $20,000 in scholarships to local students last year.
