Unfortunate Incident Raises Transparency Concerns
Friday’s incident at Lakeshore High School was unfortunate. Thankfully, no one appears to have been seriously injured. Since Lakeshore is one of the schools within District 7, I wanted to weigh in.
The incident reinforces why school safety is my number one priority. The fact that incidents like these are rare is a good thing. But they also serve to remind us that our students deserve a safe place to learn, and our teachers and employees deserve a safe place to work. When teachers and an SRO are struck while stepping in to protect students, we need to make sure employees know they will be supported and their rights protected when they reasonably intervene in a dangerous situation.
I also have questions about transparency. WDSU has identified Lakeshore High School as the campus where the altercation took place. However, that information has not been officially been released by the School System, and the Sheriff’s Office has referred only to an “area high school.” I fully support protecting the identity of the minor involved, but if there is a legal or safety reason for withholding the school’s name, parents and the public deserve an explanation.
